It can be done, and you are the one who can do it. Delicious gourmet popcorn can be made at home, your home. However, before you can popcorn kernels that will please the experts in your family, you have got to understand popcorn kernels, popcorn popping oil, and popcorn salt.

Popcorn Kernels

There are two main types of popcorn kernels, yellow and white. Which one you choose to pop depends upon your tastes and needs. The main difference between the two is their post-popping sizes. A yellow kernels pops to close to 50 times its original size, while a white kernel only pops to about 40 times. Also, if you have an especially gifted palette, you ought to notice that yellow popcorn has a stronger corn taste.

Popcorn Popping Oil

If you are going for tasty popcorn, you must never pop popcorn in a hot air popper or a microwave. Save that stuff for the in-laws (just kidding, throw it away NOW). Instead, you need to use oil, the right oil.

When choosing popcorn popping oil, you must go with something with a high smoke point. If your oil smokes while it is popping the corn, your popcorn will taste smoky. The best oils to pop popcorn in are peanut, canola, and grape seed.

However, if you are feeling brave and adventurous, you can try other popping mediums such as lard, and pork or duck fat. These will give your amazing popcorn flavors.

Popcorn Salt

Do not salt your popcorn with ordinary table salt. Its grains are too large and do not hold onto the popped corn. You want a salt that is light enough for the popped corn to catch and hold. The best way to get popcorn salt is to buy it. However, if you find yourself late at night with just the table stuff, pulse it in the food processor a few times to turn it into more of a powder.
